Locs are individual strands of hair that have matted, twisted, tangled, and locked together to form a rope like structure known as a Dreadlock.

Loc Extensions imitate the look of natural Locs (dreadlocks) by using human extension hair that has also been matted, twisted, and tangled together to instantly create the appearance of mature looking Dreadlocks. Loc Extensions are permanent.

Loc Extensions & Attachment

  • Are these someone else's dreadlocks? No, the Loc Extensions  are not someone's locs that were cut off and reused. The Loc Extensions  are handmade using human extension (weave) hair, that has been chemically cleaned/sanitized at the manufacturer, then once received by loctician it is matted by hand to make individual deadlock extensions.
  • Are Loc Extensions permanent? Yes, Loc Extensions are permanent but as with any hair style, it may be removed by cutting it off.
  • How are Loc Extensions attached? The client's natural hair is locked via the Needle Method and the extensions are sewn onto the client's newly created locs. Once attached,   extension hair wrapped around the attachment point to hide it using a light glue that breaks down after 2-3 shampoos.
  • Can the Loc Extensions be attached using a different method? No.
  • Does glue have to be used? Yes, the glue is essential in hiding the attachment points but it is not used to attach the extensions, only to visually hide the attachment points.
  • Can the Loc Extensions look smooth and shiny? No, "locs" that are shiny are not locs at all but are a braided hairstyle. Synthetic hair or straight hair are wrapped around foundation (braid or loose hair), which creates the characteristic and unnatural shiny look. Natural locs are not shiny because the hair is matted and tangled together. Clients who desire an unnatural shiny look are encouraged to get faux locs instead.
  • Will the Loc Extensions look like my hair? Yes, the loc extensions will look like your hair because the human hair used will match your texture.
  • What parting style do you use? A modified box brick layer pattern is used, brick layer for most of the head and usually straight rows in the front. The pattern used is also determined by the client's hair thickness and density.
  • Can I choose a different parting style (diamonds, circles, etc.)? No, only the modified brick layer pattern is available.
  • Can Loc Extensions be attached to my relaxed hair? No, Loc Extensions can only be attached to the client's natural hair.
  • Why does my relaxed hair have to be cut off? The point where your natural hair meets the relaxed hair is a weak point and the relaxed hair will eventually break off. This breakage can occur at any time, couple of months or a few years, either way the hair will eventually break off and take the Loc Extensions with it. For this reason, the relaxed hair must be cut off.
  • Why do I have to cut my relaxed hair off if Caucasian people are able to get locs? The issues is not with the hair texture, the problem is with the weak point where the processed hair meets the natural hair texture. This is a weak point that will eventually break off.
  • Other locticians start locs on relaxed hair. Why can't you? There are many methods of doing Loc Extensions and some locticians may choose not to cut off the relaxed hair but the method used by LYL requires that it be cut off. Clients are welcome and encouraged to do research on various methods and seek consultations with other locticians. The point where the natural hair meets the relaxed hair is a weak point and will eventually cause breakage.
  • Can I provide my own hair to be used? No, hair and other necessary supplies are already included in the price.

Pricing

  • How do I know how many inches I need? In order to determine how many inches are needed, use a measuring tape at different spots (top of head, temple, etc.) to determine your desired length. Keep in mind that all Loc Extensions are the same length to create a natural layered look. Review the Loc Extensions - Photo Gallery for inspiration or speak to loctician for advice; most clients choose 4-6 inches.
  • What does the price include? The price includes hair and Loc Extensions installation; clients do not need to purchase hair as it is included with the price.
  • Can I provide my own hair to be used? No, hair and other necessary supplies are already included in the price.
  • How do I figure out the price? Refer to Pricing section for help determining the price. If you are still unsure, contact LYL for a consultation.
  • Can I pay extra to schedule without a consultation? No, a consultation is required before an appointment can be scheduled.
  • Can I pay extra to schedule a sooner appointment? No, appointments must be scheduled at least two weeks in advance but depending on demand, the appointment may have to be booked further out.

Can I still schedule? No, the consultation requires that you hair be down and loose for examination. If your hair is currently in a style schedule consultation when are you are in between styles.
  • Can I pay extra to schedule without a consultation? No, a consultation is required before an appointment can be scheduled.

  • Why do I have to pay a deposit? Loc Extensions are handmade for each client and LYL is open by appointment only (no double or triple booking) therefore deposits are required to hold/confirm the appointment. No exceptions.

Aftercare

  • What is the aftercare?  After your appointment, you will be given aftercare instructions but generally you will follow the same care instructions as anyone else with locs. This includes covering hair before sleeping, oil scalp weekly, moisturizing locs daily, and moderating stress and tension. Loc Extensions require clients to avoid oil and stress on the attachment points.
  • What are common problems with Loc Extensions? As with locs in general, minor repairs may be needed over time but in addition to this Loc Extensions may need repairs for extension slippage or detachment, blending the size of the client's natural loc with the extension, and hiding visible threads or attachment points. These are minor repairs that most locticians are able to do and are usually noticed by the client well before a repair is actually needed. Client's who do not follow aftercare instructions are most likely to experience problems.

In order to book an appointment a consultation and 50% non-refundable deposit are required. Loc Extensions services must be booked at least 2 weeks in advance. Due to high demand however, booking may need to be scheduled even further in advance.
